Reports

Student Senate Report

Reporter: Brendan Falen: Undergraduate and Graduate
  • Had first undergraduate student council meeting of 2nd semester - passed bill to fund KU Opera and its productions.
  • Preparing for Higher Ed Day and Bill 12 On the Hill Conference in Washington DC.
  • Josh received e-mail regarding Student Resolution on the updated Dual Employment on Campus policy which specifies that students are not to have both an hourly and salaried position (on campus) at the same time -- Josh will reach out to get additional context.
  • This is due to KBOR policy and benefits compliance.
  • Student Senate will be having Student Fee hearings so that all units that receive student fees may present to the Student Fee Committee their funding requests. This helps determine how student fees are allocated.

Staff Senate Report

Reporter: Teri Chambers

•    Teri attended Strategic Alignment Meetings – found those helpful and enlightening.
•    Caitlin Day Wedel presented at the December Staff Senate meeting. Ed Hudson plans to present at the January Staff Senate meeting.

Faculty Senate Report

Reporter: Samy Brody
  • Sam went to the Board of Regents meeting this month and met with Council of Faculty Senate Presidents.
    • They are working on an awards process for Faculty of the Year Award and having the award include all faculty rather than limiting to only tenure-track faculty.
    • Working on tuition assistance to be expanded at the KBOR level rather than only institutional level. A survey will be going out soon.
  • Core 34 Letter: should this be an open letter?
  • Faculty Senate has not met yet this semester. Sam will likely have more updates after meeting with Faculty Senate.

University Senate Report

Reporter: Josh Arpin
  • Josh reminds about end-of-the-year University Senate reports. Josh plans to work on those too.
  • The Environmental and Sustainability Committee has been approved by Provost and currently with Chancellor. Charges have been drafted by Student Senate and sent to Josh.
  • Josh plans to visit with Chancellor about Gateway District and some community concerns. Chancellor may have additional insights. If there are questions, please send them to Josh.
  • The Fall Semester calendar for 2025 will be updated so the semester starts a week earlier and also ends a week earlier on December 12, 2025. This has gone through approvals, including KBOR, so it’s official on the website.
  • Excused Absence Policy is in the works with some options.
