Reports

Student Senate Report

Reporter: Henry Whalen
  • Casey Soper is meeting with Dr. Kim Warren about the Canvas resource hub, which is a centralized place to disseminate student resources (including Student Senate items).
  • $32,875 is currently remaining in the “student club fund” for the remainder of the year.
  • Henry met with Aaron Quisenberry to talk about parking and goals to focus on this year.

Staff Senate Report

Reporter: Marissa Marshall
  • Staff Senate (SS) is scheduling “forums” relating to the Docking Institute Survey. They’ve heard back from IT and hope to get that forum scheduled this month.
  • SS plans to reach out to a few units for this fall to have unit specific forums followed in the spring with a campus address.
  • SS is collaborating with AIRE to get guidance and feedback on the data analysis.
  • For tomorrow’s full staff meeting, plan to have Stephanie Rupin with the Center for Service Learning.
  • Staff Senate will be meeting with the Policy Office to clarify the policy development process.

The Staff Senate Technology Committee has been approved and is getting started. The chair for that committee will be voted on tomorrow (on October 8 Staff Senate meeting).

New Business

  • Natalie Holick, Associate Vice Chancellor of Integrity and Compliance, is here today to give guidance and a PowerPoint presentation on dealing with allegations of research misconduct.
  • Natalie would like to give information on what the proposed policy changes are to USRR Article IX and the reasoning behind the request for change:
    • The Department of Health & Human Services revised their regulations about a year ago and they must be implemented by January 2026.
    • The general phases of research misconduct remain the same but the timelines and record keeping have changed.
    • Currently this is handled separately across the Lawrence and Medical Center campuses. The Office of Compliance handles it at Med Center and Office of Research handles it at KU Lawrence campus. The Lawrence campus process is currently outlined in USRR Article IX.
    • The change to USRR Article IX would include taking the bulk of the investigation piece out of USRR and combining it with the Med Center to create a one university policy. This will help harmonize, standardize, and align the processes for both campuses.
    • This also increases the pool of expertise across both campuses when doing investigations as sometimes it’s very particular to one scientific area – and help us address regulatory requirements. It also helps reduce potential conflict.
    • USRR Article IX would retain the standards around fairness and institutional safeguards around shared governance. Governance won’t lose all involvement. The monitoring , oversight, and making sure faculty rights are retained will stay in USRR Article IX. The policy itself will be held by the Office of Integrity and Compliance since it’s a One University policy.
    • Feel free to reach out to Natalie with any additional questions.

The SenEx Committee didn’t find anything overly concerning about the proposed changes.

The Committee motions to vote to send the proposed changes to USRR Article IX as presented to University Senate: Jessica Chilcoat motions and Bozenna Pasik-Duncan seconds. Poll goes out. Motion passes unanimously and will go to University Senate for vote.

The committee briefly discusses the upcoming KBOR visit and meeting with them.

Meeting adjourned.
