Reports—
Staff Senate Report
Reporter: Jessica Chilcoat
- The Staff Senate Professional Development committee has awarded several thousand dollars so far this year for colleagues across campus.
- Jessica and Caty met with the Provost on Sept 11th and will meet with him again next week. They also met with the Chancellor. Items discussed included the reporting lines for the Provost with the One KU structure and Hilltop closing.
- Staff Senate tabled at the Staff Senate Leadership Summit on September 30th.
- There will be upcoming engagement sessions for the Great Colleges to Work For survey.
Faculty Senate Report
Reporter: Brendan Mattingly
- The Faculty Senate committees have met and have started on their charges. This includes FRPR (Faculty Rights & Privileges), Faculty Research, and SPPT (Standards & Procedures for Promotion & Tenure). SPPT now has a chair. The Faculty Rights Board is also set up.
- Brendan has met twice with the Provost, and they discussed Hilltop along with One KU and Office of Research reporting lines.
- Brendan also met with Abby Ropes in the Policy Office to discuss several upcoming policy changes.
University Senate Report
Reporter: Larry Morriss
- On Nov 19th the assistant secretary with the Department of Education will be presenting at University Senate. General Counsel will also be coming to visit with University Senate in the future.
- Larry is hoping to get feedback on the union contract and the difference between due paying members and non-paying members. Larry hopes to visit with the Chancellor and/or General Counsel about this.
Unfinished Business —
University Senate Code Article X, Section 2: RRB Membership :
-
The proposed changes include increasing the retired faculty membership from one to two retired faculty, and that any voting member may be appointed as chair.
The redline edits also made clearer that both the Office of the Provost representative and Endacott Society representative are non-voting, ex-officio members,
- There was discussion among SenEx as the redline edits for this meeting also included : “the committee will also include any retired faculty or retired staff who are ex-officio, non-voting members.”
- This was not included in what SenEx discussed at the previous meeting. The SenEx committee feels that having any retired faculty or retired staff as ex-officio members is not necessary as the participants are still welcome to attend the meeting, and other University Senate committees don’t operate within that ex-officio realm.
- There is concern this sentence will be difficult to interpret. A distribution list should fill this need, and a code change is not needed.
- This sentence is removed.
- The committee votes on increasing the number of faculty retirees from one to “two” as that portion is new from the previous meeting.
- Erik Lundquist moves to vote on approval of this increase from one to two retired faculty on the RRB Committee and forward this onto University Senate. Missy Somers seconds. 6 Approve. No objections or further discussion. Motion passes and will go to University Senate.
New Business —
Hilltop Child Development Center :
- Larry shares that a childcare solutions working group is being assembled at request of Chancellor Girod and Provost Mafi since there has been disruption of childcare services with Hilltop closing.
- Larry asks if there are volunteers from SenEx that would like to be considered for this working group.
- Jessica Chilcoat nominates Missy Somers. Missy shares to the committee about experience and qualifications.
- Larry plans to ask Provost Mafi if Missy may be appointed to the working group.
