Reports—
Faculty Senate Report
Brendan reported the following. On Thursday, Brendan will meet with the policy office to check on the progress of updates with the MOA and current policy. On Friday there is a senate leadership meeting with the provost if anyone has any concerns. Any information about future leadership and OneKU would be of interest. Also, the budget is looming. Update on Hilltop and what is the big rush on closing on October 30. Haiying Long reported on the Oct. 1 University Senate meeting with Travis Goff with Athletics. Haiying reported that Goff talked a little about the budget. He also spoke about the student housing managed by Marriott, outside of KU. Haiying shared that a comment was made that the KU Community was not involved or informed on recent projects. Goff said no fees were charged to students.
All Teams Meeting. HLC Accreditation. It will not affect many faculty. There are four committees with faculty representation involved with HLC. This is not as dramatic as the last HLC session.
International Students. If students want to take internships that is not part of their degree, international students cannot take those internships. There are time limits on how long students can stay and get their degree. Anything beyond 120 hours requires an extension, which will be difficult to approve.
Optional Practical Training (OPT). International students have a limited amount of time to complete requirements and optional training. There was a comment that these issues are not law, but rather an executive action, subject to change in the future. Another comment was made that this will scare students with uncertainty. KU will feel the effect of these changes.
OCRTIX is hosting a national academy/summit about harassment on Oct. 22. It is free and open to the public.
Unfinished Business —
None.
New Business —
Brendan reported that he met with FRPR two weeks ago. One thing he tried to convey to the committee is that shared governance still has a responsibility to hear from faculty. Shared Governance should still be a place where faculty could talk about their rights and privileges.
Erik motioned to move to closed session to closed session to discuss committee personnel.
Sarah seconded. Moved to closed session.
Returned from closed session. Meeting adjourned.
