Dear Colleagues,

University governance provides an opportunity for faculty to have a direct voice in university policy and procedures. KU faculty members have a strong tradition of governance participation and leadership through the Faculty Senate. Some of the recent important issues that have come to Faculty Senate's attention include questions of faculty rights, program discontinuation, sexual assault accommodations, library support, and others.

The university succeeds better when decisions are made through shared governance and through meaningful input from representatives of the faculty perspective. The Faculty Senate succeeds best when it encompasses as many diverse perspectives as possible. To effectively represent all of you, we need as many diverse voices on the senate as possible.

Participation in Faculty Senate

  • Members elected to the Faculty Senate are also members of the University Senate, meeting with staff and student senators.
  • Members serve three-year terms.
  • Senators communicate with their departments, strengthening the ties in each community.
  • Faculty Senators are voted to participate in the Faculty Executive Committee, which provides an active leadership role in the senate’s operations.

Senate Meetings

Faculty Senators serve on both the Faculty Senate and University Senate. The Senates meet on separate Thursdays between 3:15 and 5:00 p.m. Each Senate usually meets once a month in the fall and spring.

Representation from All Schools and from the Libraries

The Faculty Senate consists of 39 members and includes at least one member of the faculty from the College, from each school of the university, and from the libraries. There are no continuing members in Social Welfare, Journalism and Mass Communications, Law, and Professional Studies.

We encourage you to help KU faculty use the democratic space of governance to advance the cause of all their colleagues by nominating yourself or a colleague to Faculty Senate. Please visit the elections site and review the list of continuing members and those not eligible for re-election. You can nominate via the online form or email your nominations to govern@ku.edu
