Specific Charges
We will schedule discussion of these for the first meeting in the spring
SPPT committee is largely reactive, responding to specific charges from Administration – we do not have a history of proactive review. No list of departments that have or haven’t been reviewed.
Question raised: Does the reactive posture serve or should review across departments be more formalized and proactive through this committee?
Comments: Finding exemplary policies to share with departments developing/updating policies for aligning with Article VI could be helpful – departments have asked for this to avoid “recreating the wheel”
Journalism Review – first task to take up of specific charges
History Response – Brad volunteered take first review of History response to SPPT feedback based on prior work with it
Actions Items:
- Specific Charges will be focus of first meeting in the spring semester 2023
- ALL: review Journalism materials for first meeting of spring semester 2023
- Brad to review History response and report to recommend next steps to committee
No action item yet agreed in response to broader questions about committee practice
Documentation and Records/Permanent Structure for Committee Continuity
There is a BB site with some files from prior years; there is also a Teams site.
Currently there are no committee established procedures on storing records.
Discussion of better approach – umbrella system through Faculty Senate for all standing committees so that there will be a uniform system for faculty governance.
Action Items:
- Need to establish comprehensive repository for SPPT Committee records (no deadline set)
- Need procedures for maintaining repository (no deadline set)
For now, we will arrange a committee system but hope for future centralized system to reinforce strength of faculty governance system and committee continuity/preservation of committee knowledge.
SPPT Committee Meetings in Spring 2023
We need to set spring schedule meeting plan/frequency for SPPT
Request to avoid Friday to preserve writing
Nisha volunteered to gather feedback on availability (doodlepoll or other)
Procedures for Review of Various Types of Faculty Positions that Qualify for Promotion but Not Tenure
Issue raised of uncertainty members of UCPT have faced in reviewing promotion for various kinds of non-tenure track faculty up for review
Question: are procedures related to faculty promotion within the review purview of the SPPT?
Comments: if this is the only formal committee at university level that provides review of promotion and tenure procedures, it would seem that yes, this is within the purview
No immediate action item on this – not currently a charge
