New Business

KU International Affairs Survey:

Purpose and Title:

  • The committee came together to review and refine the international student experience survey they’ve been actively contributing to over the previous weeks via working document.
  • The purpose of the survey is to capture the international student experience including successes, contributions, challenges, barriers, needs, and resources.
  • The committee agrees on a revised survey title to reflect a more balanced focus on international student experiences. New title is “Survey of International Student Successes, Challenges, and Resources”

Survey Anonymity -- The committee agrees the survey introduction should:

  • Confirm that no names or personal identifying information are collected. All responses are anonymous.
  • Race and nationality are removed to keep anonymous, but the committee thinks keeping “undergraduate vs. graduate” status + “number of years at KU” is helpful without being identifying.
  • Explain the survey results will be collated, analyzed, and shared with relevant offices at KU and the state of Kansas to help with programming and advocacy (without guaranteeing policy changes).

Student Perspectives and Experiences:

  • The committee worked on revising questions to reflect students’ perspectives and how they felt their contributions were perceived.
  • Survey should be accessible to students across all disciplines and native languages. Try to reduce ambiguity in the language.

Challenges:

  • The “challenges” section was expanded to acknowledge barriers of varying nature including individual, local, national, and global.
  • The text box questions were revised to more clearly ask respondents their “top three needs, concerns, and resources” and why they’re important.

Action Items and Next Steps:

  • Julie volunteers to prepare a Qualtrics survey. Megan volunteers to proofread it.
  • The committee agrees the survey should go out no earlier than week of Jan 26th due to start of classes and orientation for arriving international students.
  • The committee will meet in mid-February to review and analyze the results after the survey closes and determine next steps with the goal of the survey going out that week of January 26th (with a reminder going out one week later).
  • A report can be generated from the survey results for the committee to look at before meeting in mid-February.
