New Business

Josh Arpin and Derek Kwan - One KU Initiative

  • Example was given regarding student who had access at KU Edwards/Med Center but could not access the Rec Center in Lawrence
  • Tuition differential may need to be discussed and resolved.
  • Student fees at KU Edwards and KU Lawrence is an issue.
  • There is optimism that KU Edwards will be open to discussion in the spirit of the OneKU philosophy.
  • There is curiousity as to which specific classes are creating issues at KU Edwards. We will need to seek clarity from Ryan.

Jana Fitchett - BUS 110 & 120

  • BUS 110 is offered 6 times in fall and twice in spring. BUS 120 offered 5 times in the spring and 1 time in the fall (depending on enrollment needs).
  • Additional issue is that it is only offered on Fridays or during practice times.
  • Creating an online version for BUS 110/120 could be a solution. It cannot be just for athletes.

ArchD also has some sequential classes where it would be difficult for athletes to complete. It would be difficult to waive a pre-requisite due to classes being skills based.

Engineering - issues with scheduling and Physical Chemistry. A student was able to take it online at another school and transfer it in. Seems odd that credit could be transferred in from another school, but not allowed with KU Edwards at this point.

Potential issues with Supply Chain

Josh taught 100% online classes this past summer and those courses had strong traction with athletes due to his proactive communication with advisors.

Information request regarding athlete numbers by school/major.

Evanna Dominic and Josh Arpin:

Universal in-person seminar ideally but may not be possible

1.    Is there a way to leverage it in a degree program?
2.    LDST 301 is a required course for Greek life.
3.    Athletics could state all athletes need to take this course but it would need to open to everyone.
4.    Office of First Year Experience should be leveraged.
5.    Would it be required?
6.    Sounds like it would be best online.
7.    Faculty were informed that all students would learn Microsoft Teams during orientation, but that did not happen.
8.    There is a desire to start a transfer students club.
9.    This relates to advising videos.
10.    Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Kim Warren is thinking a lot about transfer students and incoming students and orientating them appropriately. We need to include her in the conversation because she cares deeply about this topic.

A University Senate ad-hoc committee was established to analyze the Gateway District. What input could faculty/staff/students provide on evolving developments? The goal of this committee is to ensure transparency. There is concern on how the project is being paid for. Specifically, on how the debt is going to be guaranteed. The University itself or another entity?

Anna Abernathy:
Are there already existing videos about the curriculum or is the video content primarily promotional?
Videos need to provide nuanced information about classes/pre-requisites that may only be offered once per school year.
Videos would be a substitute for an in-person advisor meeting.
Supplemental videos for general tracks – pre-med, pre-law, etc.
KAI advisors do not know details for every single school, so these videos would help fill the knowledge gaps.
ArcD has made great progress on this front
