Unfinished Business —
- Coordination between athletic academic advisors and school academic advisors
- Joey Wood provided an overview of the Student Athlete Survey results re: Academic Advising. Ben Easters provided additional context.
- When asked how helpful it would be if the student athlete had a specific advisor from their major in addition to their Academic Counselor, there was not a consensus among the respondents.
- Few athletes had ever used a non-athletic career development/advising resource.
- Ideas and suggestions were discussed.
- Hope to have a dedicated athlete advisor for each major
- How do we make this happen?
- The sheer size of CLAS makes this a challenge
- Ryan will speak with JA contacts
- In person meeting with the advisor and athletes at the beginning of each semester
- Complexities were discussed related to differing practice schedules
- Instead of an in-person meeting, could the advisor record a video and then disseminate to relevant athletes via the Teamworks app?
- Meeting with upper classmen to mentor younger students in the same major and sport prior to enrollment
- Question re: the relationship between Athletics academic counselors and Jayhawk Academic Advising
- There is consistent communication and it serves as a good check and balance.
- Hope to have a dedicated athlete advisor for each major
- Update on in-person session 2 summer class additions
- Luke reported that School of Education will be offering a couple in person classes and appropriate parties have been in touch with Ryan
- Conversations have occurred between Roberta Pokphanh and registrar’s office
- If you have enough students, then a class can be offered
- Kim Warren is considering the scenario if numbers are not there
- B-School classrooms may not be accessible this summer due to tech equipment being completely replaced
- Ryan feels good about where we are for summer
- Resources and ideas for instructors and student athletes regarding how to handle missed absences
- Tabling overall topic – no action being taken
- University Senate and many committees discussing
- It was mentioned that a building where remote work is now the norm could be converted into a testing facility. This would be game changing for make-up tests/accommodations. Hopefully active by Fall, 2024.
- The current primary issue surrounding the new absence policy is related to illness/injury.
New Business —
- Ryan will provide a presentation in April on overall student athlete statistics.
- Next meeting is April 11, 4pm in Cap Fed room 1170
- Adjourn
- 5:00pm
