Approval of Previous Minutes —
Minutes from April 18, 2025, approved by acclamation.
Guest Speaker Presentation —
Guest Speaker: Travis GoffTravis Goff, Director of KU Athletics:
Travis gives a presentation on the “Changing Landscape of Kansas Athletics” including rebranding, reorganizing, and the House Settlement:
- KU Athletics worked with Deloitte & Touche for accountability and best practices, along with the Chancellor and CFO offices.
- Athletics’ new revenue stream from the Gateway District and the incremental revenues it’s expected to bring will hopefully far exceed the debt. Additional revenue is predicted to come by other uses of the Gateway District such as the conference center, hotel, and retail.
- David Booth gift to KU Athletics:
- Approximately $300 million gift.
- This is a long-term gift which adds an “annual” revenue string to KU Athletics and has helped fund Phase I of the Gateway Project and $75 million will go towards Phase II.
Travis talks about revenue sharing with KU’s various athletic programs. This is separate from the Gateway District.
KU Leads – student support programming to help student athletes with funding, professional growth, and managing the landscape of collegiate athletics and after graduation.
New Business —
Charges and Subcommittees:
Megan Green and Anna Abernathy: AEC Courses and international student athletes:
- International students entering KU can take the English Proficiency Test instead of the TOEFL. They can either “test out” or may need to take Applied English Center (AEC) classes.
- KU is one of the few organizations that have AEC. This is helpful with recruiting.
- KU has many international athletes but AEC has relatively few class offerings and sections at variable times. Therefore, the AEC classes can easily conflict with practice -- such as 10:00am – 11:50am AEC class, but athletic practice is 10am – Noon.
- If the AEC class is on several days of the week and there’s only one section, there aren’t many other options and it’s a challenge for international students needing AEC coursework. Megan Greene offers to help with this charge along with Anna Abernathy.
-
Jana thinks CTE may be offering courses to help.
Shu Tosaka – There is a new advising tool taking place of DPR system called “Stellic.”
- It’s now in charge of PTD program.
- Shu would like to help with this. Schedule Builder is feeling the challenges – it takes a lot more work now for students.
Josh Arpin and Casey Soper - Can the alcohol and sexual assault online trainings be available sooner? Can this start in June?
- Plan to reach out to Provost or Student Affairs to see if student athletes can have early access, such as June?
- When students go through orientation, the required training comes up. However, these come up in August and it may be helpful if the training could be completed sooner.
- Josh also working on a “Testing Center” pilot for excused absences.
Jana Fitchett and Anna Soles:
- Core 34
- Travel dates and travel letters.
- “Teamworks” -- know this is an issue.
Charge 3: Josh Arpin and Jack Ritter will work on
Charges 4, 5, 6, 8: Austin Bogina working on along with Jack Ritter and Casey Soper (Anna helping with charge 8).
Charge 7: Monitor Academic Success: Will Collins and Anne Cao plan to work on.
Orientation with student athletes: Ryan King and Anna Abernathy.
Charge 8: Transfer Portal Window: Anna Abernathy works with a lot of transfer students and will work on this charge. The transfer portal window starts January 2 – this is a very quick turnaround.
Minor Business classes are going to be online.
Coaches are not allowed to reach out to faculty and staff. Kansas athletics staff can reach out, but a coach shouldn’t reach out directly.
Meetings in the future: Wagnon Conference Room – second floor of Allen Fieldhouse. Look for updated invites.
Meeting Adjourned.
