New Business

  1. Introductions of AP&P members and Guests from the Ad-Hoc committee to review program discontinuance
  2. Ani Kokobobo opened the meeting with the ground rules and introduction of Ben and Renee. Ani informed the committee and the guests from the University that this was not an attempt to discontinue the Holocaust studies only the certificate.
    1. Renee Perelmutter detailed the issue with Holocaust and Genocide Undergraduate Certificate. She informed the committee that the issue was based on scheduling issues with the classes from other parts of CLAS. The scheduling issues make the certificate more difficult to achieve than the Minor in Holocaust program. Since inception of the Undergraduate Certificate in 2018, there has been one student sign up and complete the program and there is one student in the program now that will not be affected as she will complete the program in the Spring Semester. Renee also stated that some of the courses in the Certificate as it was designed are offered infrequently thus causing some lack of participation in the program.
    2. Ben Eggelston, reiterated the fact that the Jewish Studies Program and the related Holocaust courses are not threatened by this request for discontinuance and that the CLAS requested this discontinuance of the Certificate only due to lack of student interest in the certificate program. Ben also stated that discontinuing the certificate will not result in lost opportunities.
    3. Sadie Williams stated that the initial notice of the meeting to discuss the discontinuance was a bit concerning to many students but once the context was made clear, it relieved some of the initial concerns.
    4. Homayoon Raftijo, tutor to the Athletic Department read his statement as to why Jewish Studies and Holocaust and Genocide studies are important at this critical time in the world.
    5. The AP&P Committee then discussed what had been presented and voted to reconvene on 12 October to allow the committee to digest what had been presented before voting on the program discontinuance.
    6. After the 12 October meeting, the AP&P will write and submit its recommendations to 1) the Faculty of the program, 2) the University Senate, and 3) the Provost, for or against the Recommendation for Discontinuance of an Active Academic Program.
    7. University Senate will then make their recommendation to the Provost by the end of the fall semester
    8. Provost will report it’s recommendations to the Chancellor, and appropriate faculty, Dean(s) and governance bodies
    9. Chancellor evaluates the recommendations and makes final decision.
  3. The next meeting of the committee will be October 12, 2022 to discuss and vote on the discontinuance of the Holocaust and Genocide Undergraduate Certificate.
