Guest Speaker Presentation

Guest Speaker: Keeli Nelson and Michelle Ginavan Hayes

Keeli Nelson is a Senior International Employment Advisor with Human Resources:

•    Keeli works with Emily Lee to help international employees and develop KU Immigration Sponsorship policy.
•    They work with Deans, Chairs, and Directors on International Hiring policies and immigration sponsorship eligibility.
•    Their office prepares and files KU Immigration cases and helps maintain compliance with Dept. of Labor and immigration regulations.

•    While International Support Services at KU  works primarily with students and obtaining F-1 visas, Keeli’s office works with the employment-based side at KU and employment-based work visas.
•    Keeli’s area works with many areas on campus including Global Operations to provide a smooth and welcoming transition for hiring.

Michelle Ginavan Hays is a Program Manager in Human Resources who helps with Relocation and Dual Career Services.

The program is “designed to provide a positive culture of support and belonging for new employees and their families as they transition to KU and a new community.” It offers resources to assist with relocation and community connections / services to help eligible partners in their job search:

•    Relocation Resources – connects people to resources with housing, moving companies, and assistance w/ university supported moving packages if applicable.
•    Community Connection – provides resources to help employees and families feel connected to the campus and the community.
•    Dual Career Services – this just rolled out in January 2024. It is for partners of new tenured/tenure-track faculty and executive level positions. Assist with finding career opportunities on campus and in the surrounding area.

New Business

How can Governance help?
Remember these services exist. Michelle is happy to present to any group on campus.

Email is RDCS@ku.edu or e-mail Michelle at mginavan@ku.edu

There are also resources for Visiting Scholars that may need housing and support for a shorter time frame:
•    There are some apartment complexes in Lawrence that have flexibility of less than 1 year lease - as Visiting Scholar appointments are often less than a year.
•    There also are KU faculty that go on sabbatical and may have home to rent for a shorter period. The integration of KU connections can be very helpful so that international support services are not siloed.

Inviting guest speaker to come for next meeting.

Lynne Vanahill, Director of International Support Services and chief compliance officer for F-1 and J-1 programs at KU would be helpful to invite if available.
