Guest Speaker Presentation

Updates from Lynne Vanahill and Roberta Pokphanh regarding International Student Services :

Overview of ISS Services

ISS assists incoming International Students & Scholars along with providing support in:

  • Health Insurance
  • Programming
  • Reporting
  • Orientation and Advising

Annual Expenses & Revenue: Need about 1.4 million to operate our office. International students are allowed to work 3 years past graduation which ISS still does reporting on.

New Business

Campus Wide Fee to Student Senate:

  • Would the International Affairs Committee endorse an all campus fee?
  • The cost burden shouldn't be all by international students. All students benefit from international students on campus.

Request to Student Senate - we need to be clear on the value to the whole student body. Student Senate support + Increasing Student Fees.

If this group supports this - it's helpful for us to communicate the rationale to the community.

  • Action Item: Vote on Campus Fee Proposal to Student Senate: to increase student fees by reallocating fees

Julie Myer makes motion. Megan Greene seconds motion. Unanimous Approval: 5 approve

  • The International Affairs budget drives the work of 10 offices.
  • Revenue from one office can support shortfalls in others, so there is shifting. However, if it is short and go into debt, then need to adjust going forward to pay that debt off in the next fiscal year. Because our budget is almost entirely people and we are 92% self-funded now - it means personnel adjustments to stay within our means.
  • Should there be an ISS Report presented at the SenEx Jan 27th meeting?
  • The committee unanimously approves if ISS is ready at that time.

International Student Survey: Help us tell the story at KU and what is important to you:

Outcomes and recommendations from the committee:

  • Action Item:  Take the comments we have and draft a new survey. Committee will meet in early to mid-January 2026.

Meeting Adjourned.
