At the previous meeting, the committee drafted potential charges:
- Promote environmental and sustainability on campus including local biodiversity.
- Promote Green New Deal
- Collaborate with Student Senate and partners in Lawrence surrounding food systems, composting, and applicable environmental programs!
- Reduce waste - composting?
- Work on water use and water efficiency on campus
- Education surrounding sustainability.
- Work with “One day One KU” - reach out to partners to collaborate for education and funding.
- Promote alternative forms of transportation.
- Develop a policy regarding composting.
- Feedback from SenEx (on the drafted charges) included “possibly rein them in a bit” so that they’re actionable. Where applicable, include possibly actions to attain the goal.
- Perhaps the charge surrounding the Green New Deal can include:
- “Use the KU Student Senate Green New Deal to recommend policy on sustainability and biodiversity.
- Promote, educate, and collaborate with university departments and external partners regarding goals in the KU Student Senate Green New Deal.
-
For Education and Outreach, what does the committee feel is important?
- The committee discusses how the Green New Deal can be clarified and promoted. This was initiated by Student Senate and recommended to Provost.
- Perhaps the committee could go through the Green New Deal and highlight areas that seem significant and important.
- Are sub-committees something the committee wants to do – in order to look at multiple things and develop priorities?
- What about: "Assess existing and planned campus sustainability practices and educate the KU community about those practices" as one of the charges?
The draft charges include composting a lot. This is under the “food section” of Green New Deal.
- KU Dining may work with composting. What do other campuses do?
- Invite someone from KU Dining and KU Housing?
- Invite Callie Long?
- Look at Campus Master Plan and get a sense of where we’re at so we’re not reinventing the wheel:
- Possibly get a baseline feel for what sustainability is like on campus and get feedback from the community about what’s working.
- What is the baseline of native plants?
- Perhaps committee members could take different topics.
What about: "Assess existing and planned campus sustainability practices and educate the KU community about those practices" as one of the charges? Brian and Shayla will reach out to potential guests to visit at the next meeting.
Next meeting scheduled for Thursday, Dec 18, 2025.
Meeting adjourned.
